Giving to others what one is craving is considered an especially compassionate act. What Muslims gain through abstaining from food and drink during the daylight hours, and also from any bad habits, words, backbiting, consumerism, during this month, is the reminder that all we have comes from God and to be thankful for all His many bounties. It is also a time to reflect upon the fact that others have far less than we do and in our thankfulness to God for being so blessed, we are also reminded to try our best to ease the plight of those less fortunate. Anonymity is very important in this regard; the giver is unaware as to whom he is giving to and is thus thankful to God for the opportunity to give; the recipient is unaware as to who has given and is thus thankful to God for being provided for. This way, neither party feels obliged or arrogant towards the other and both return to God.
