Madina Nabirie and another successful Whisper's work

It was in early February when our outreach worker Sam discovered a very sick two year old girl Madina Nabirie during our regular community work around the rural villages.

It was a shocking discovery when we learnt what a poor condition this small little girl was- especially when she was accompanied by her own 22 year old mother.

That day we didn't ask very many things and took her and her mother right to the hospital in Jinja to run various blood tests, x-rays and to be put on an immediate treatment.

Sam, out reach worker
'I would like you to know what all it takes for an organisation like Whisper to take care of such children like Madina.'

Poor Madina to get into such a state it is not always the case that the family has no food to give her. They are lots of underlying and complicated issues that such families have. It is not at all to excuse the facts of this type of negolection towards an innocent child who cannot go and reach for the food by herself, especially when the baby is very sick and weak too.

She hardly understands what is going on in her little life. Whisper is dealing with all kinds of matter regarding such families or mothers to motivate them to believe in a good life and to believe in hope, because the hope is there for everyone.

To make the work a success Whisper also needs to provide for absolutely everything at the beginning  Families like this do not have any funds for transport to get to the hospital, but if they do have for the transport, they may miss funds for the certain medication given at the hospital, or payments for blood tests, they won't have funds to feed themselves at the hospital, they will miss money to communicate to their relatives. Attending the hospital one needs to take lots of things with them as you are only given a bed and sometimes not even the bed. You need to have a floor mat with you, blankets, sheets, various type of clothing to change, basins, flask, cosmetics for the baby, and the list goes on and on and on....

Mothers like Madina's mothers often go to the local doctors or clinics but they also often fail to finish the ongoing treatment for their children due to the lack of funds and of course the lack of support from their own husbands or families.

Whisper however helps in every way possible to those single mothers having difficulties and facing hard challenges.

Regarding Madia, our only aim that time was to get this little girl to the doctors as soon as possible and make sure we all do everything to save this child's life.

Madina is eating her daily boiled egg
She was so poorly; she couldn't cry properly, not a proper voice would come out of her. She was constantly crying. We would go to visit her to the hospital absolutely every day. We needed to give all the support to the mother, so she takes all her motivation to take care of this girl.

This picture says it all! "Thank you for not giving up on us!" it says.
Whisper would be giving daily money to the mother for her breakfast, lunch and dinners. We would  bring food to Madina requested by the hospital to support her additional nutritional food that she was receiving from them as a part of the treatment. One time it happened that the mother would buy herself a new shoes, instead spend of saving it for the food. Those times are very upsetting for us and it would be upsetting for everyone else, however we need to see beyond this, use our social worker and counsellor to speak to her, and focus on the most important thing which was the future of this little girl.

With Whisper's help, hospital run lots of blood tests and other diagnoses on Madina. She was treated for various infections and malnourishment. The blood test proved the worst we were fearing according to her health condition. She is HIV positive and every single day really matters now in her life.

She stayed in the hospital a full month, and we stressed about this little girl every day.

Finally, last week, this girl was discharged back home. She gave us the biggest gift we all wished for. Her beautiful smile. :-)

All the efforts her mother and us together made were so wroth it!!!

After a consultation with the nursers, doctors and the social worker we carefully considered all the options and agreed to take Madina back to her home with her mother to give the mother a chance to take care of her own child well. Such decision was made only under the circumstances that she would be closely monitored, supervised and obviously supported by the Whisper's outreach team.

On the departure day from the hospital, we needed to make sure that Madina will return to the good environment, and she will have all the comfort she needs. Thanks to your donations towards Madina, Whisper provided a new mattress and beddings, food,  and cosmetics and paid for all her medication she needed. She was supplied with Plumpy nuts - which is a high nutritional food supply that allows her to eat up to 3000 calories every day and grow healthily.  It is very important that her immunity is now supported the best way it can be due to her HIV status.

So far Madia was home for about seven days now and Whisper has already been to visit them. The next visit is scheduled for the next week when we are taking her for another check up to the hospital.

We will update you on any other progress Whisper will made regarding this little girl.

We strongly believe she will have plenty of happy years ahead of her, as we also wish well for her young mother who has been through a lot in her life.

We can only continue to do our best with your support. We need your support that can fund our ongoing work.

We thank you all so much for every £1 donated towards our projects.

I don't find many right words to describe how much your support means to the people living in Ugandan communities.

You may have heard this so many times, but I am talking here about real lives and souls. We need your monthly and regular support to continue..

How much better they both look now!
If you decide to sponsor Madina or any other child with just £5 a month, this will mean the world to those children because it will mean securing their future.

Madina now hopes for better days.

We have showed her the hope she never had.

We proved her they are people who COME BACK AND DO WHAT THEY HAVE PROMISED!

We are in it together! You are the part of their lives too and you will be part of their lives forever - if you make the decision to do so.
